Embracing And Engaging Constraints

Aikido as a modern martial art that have borrowed and transformed traditional Values and Wisdom to apply in our daily lives .

In our daily lives , at home , school or in our workplace there will always be issues old and new cropping up . Conflicts of interest is also common . Our ability to handle such issues and conflicts and restore harmony is vital to our Mental , Physical and Spiritual health . For corporate management it is crucial to the productivity and efficiency of the company .

Aikido practice is passive in nature . The goal of aikido is not to cause harm or destroy the opponent . In an aikido class , the practice is mostly done with a partner . The teacher will show a technique to counter and immobolize a strike , grab or hold .Two person will then practice this over and over until the teacher continue with the next move. The two will exchange roles as the Nage ( the person who is being held or strike at ) and Uke ( the partner that initiate the attack ) .

Uke have a very important role to play. Without the Uke , Nage cannot truly use his mind and body to refine his techniques . Uke in turn have to feel the technique and movement of the Nage and use his mind and body to recieve the technique and this is refered as Ukemi . It is said that if ones Ukemi is good , his aikido will grow . After 22 years of Aikido , I am still trying to give good Ukemi to my partners during my aikido practice .

Irimi which is the entering movement in Aikido is similar to embracing and engaging conflicts and issues in the corporate world.

Tenkan which is the turning movement is similar to leading the situation around so that one can utilize the energy for a possible resolution .

Irimi and Tenkan is to take a position whereby two or more parties can enter to pause and reflect on the different possibilities of creating solutions . To collaborate . Also it gives a position to see things from the others’ point of view .

Maai is to maintain a harmonious distance at all time .

A Bit Of YMCA and Kensankai History

He was introduced to aikido by his good friend Mr.Tee Cheng Sum in 1985. At the YMCA Aikido club, Kuala Lumpur he trained under George Lo sensei.

He was recommended to grade for his shodan ( 1st dan ) exam in 1988. The exam was conducted by visiting instructors Shigenobu Okumura shihan and Etsuji Horii sensei of Honbu Dojo ( Aikido World Headquarters).

In 1989 George sensei migrated to Australia and Mr. Tee was put in charge and with Marcus , Lee Foo Kai and Leong Yew Meng expanded the classes and developed the base for aikido expansion in Kuala Lumpur. It was during this time that Marcus sensei seek the help of Aikikai Singapore and the late Foo sensei of Seremban and made frequent visit to Seremban and Singapore, particularly Harry Ng sensei and Philip Lee sensei to learn.

In 1993 Marcus sensei visited Honbu Dojo and stayed in Japan for about 3 weeks. he also visited Hironobu Yamada shihan’s dojos in Chiba Prefecture whom he met in Singapore. It was about this time that Mr. Low Thian Seng, Dr.Leong, Mr. Raymond Kwok and Mr. Tony Yap joined the YMCA aikido club. With this dedicated team of people the YMCA aikido club decided to form The Peninsula Aikido Association which was later changed to The Malaysian Aikido Association.

In 1994 Marcus sensei was upgarded to nidan(2nd dan) by visiting Honbu instructors Seishiro Endo shihan. It was at this period of time that Marcus sensei decided to become independent from the YMCA aikido club and set up Shobukan Aikido dojo under the umbrella of Jun Yamada shihan of Aikikai Malaysia. In 1996 he was upgraded to sandan( 3rd dan) by Yamada shihan.

In 2004 Marcus sensei became independent from Aikikai Malaysia and in 2005 approached Etsuji Horii shihan of Kobe Sanda Aikido Dojo to be the shihan and technical director for Shobukan. Marcus sensei was upgraded to yondan(4th dan) in 2006 by Horii shihan. Kensan is the name given to Marcus sensei’s dojo .

Horii shihan make regular twice yearly visits to Malaysia to conduct seminars and upgrading.Kensankai Aikido Malaysia is under the umbrella organization of Sanda Kobe Aikido Dojo that report to Honbu Dojo ( Aikikai ). Kensankai Aikido Malaysia is proud to work in collaboration with the YMCA Aikido Club and Seishinkai to arrange the seminars done by Horii shihan in Malaysia. The rest as they say is history!

Whole life seek out the way, and try to understand it more deeper.

Once you step into this world, you have some kind of dignity.

When you are serious about pursuing it, no one can disturb you.

Once you step into this world, there is no exit, no end, you cannot find it easily.

But one day, sure you will get the way.

You can find the way, if you continue your keiko with hope, sincerity, bravery, without haughty.

Continue and repeat your keiko in silence, without compromise to your satisfaction. Look for a possibility in your situation, Then you must build up your own castle.

The castle that you build up like this, no one can besiege it.It will be impregnable, strong and beautiful.

Every day just Kensan .

Aikido is translated as

“The Way Of Harmony With The Ki OF The Universe”

Aikido is a modern Japanese Martial Art( Budo )founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883~1969 ) whom aikidoka address as O’sensei which means great teacher.

O’sensei mastered the principles of Japanese Budo ,then went through hard training and developed the “Art” into the “Way” which became the modern Budo.

Aikido is not fighting with force. The techniques which derive from IRIMI(entering) and TENKAN(turning) only control other’s violent force and does not promote bloodshed. It is suitable for the present time when many believe cherishing lives is important. This is one of the reasons why aikido is called the Budo of “Harmony”.

Purpose of Aikido

The Founder said “Aiki is not fighting and defeating the opponent”. Aikido is the training of one’s body and soul through repeated practice with others depending on their level of skill. By mastering the circular movement, one will develop the heart of harmony (joy ,strength ,freedom and tenderness ) which is the essence of Aikido.

Characteristic Of Aikido

Characteristic of Aikido is the movement of circular motion as in IRIMI and MAAI( harmonious distance ) , and the techniques that come from absolute centering of balance. With Aikido one can control others with ones’ natural and beautiful movement. Aikido does not require special physical strength. Thus anyone can join the practice.

Practicing Aikido

Aikido have no tournaments . There is no such idea as “Defeating Others ” in the spirit of Aikido. Tournaments develop desire for victory and defeat. Aikido is a Budo that places self discipline as the most important factor. With everyday practice of strengthening body and soul ,good health and a strong mind is earned.

Aikido Today

As of now Aikido is loved by more than 2,500,000 people in 85 countries including the elderly ,women , children and the disabled.
